Farewell, Freedom

The story of Aydin Dogan’s   capitulation to Erdogan and  the future of press freedom in Turkey.

 

Dogan’s flagship daily Hurriyet (Freedom in English), is an iconic name in Turkish press history, as well as one of the last bastions of impartial journalism remaining in the main-stream.

Demirorens are staunch supporters of Erdogan, already owning pro-government dailies Milliyet and VATAN.  The same day, the Grand Assembly passed legislation authorizing Turkey’s media watchdog Radio and TV Regulatory Board (RTUK) to ban streaming broadcasts on Internet, adding to government pressure on free press.  Is it time to say “Farewell“  to press freedom in Turkey?
