EU-Turkey relations: Can they warm up despite political differences?

Interesting. From the perspective of Turkey, relatively low-cost  prior conditions  for a new and expanded  Customs Union.

The facts leading to the Commission’s assessment still hold as it was set out in the recent Enlargement Package of the Commission.  The recommendation in the new report will not relaunch the accession process but surely go some way in improving and warming up relations with Turkey. However, to make any progress, Turkey is required to meet at least the following conditions.

  • Continue to refrain from all illegal drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean
  • Refrain from other actions that do not respect the sovereignty of EU Member States
  • Take decisive steps to increase alignment with the EU common foreign and security policy
  • Keep addressing the circumvention of EU restrictive measures against Russia
