But as Mr Erdogan juggles his geopolitical (and economic) options, his one-man rule is getting rickety. The almighty president has rid himself of everybody who might know which levers to pull: liberal and secular fellow travellers of his early governments; co-founders of his own neo-Islamist ruling party; tens of thousands of Gulenist cadres; and the cream of the civil service.

“Turkey is on the verge of making some critical decisions, including whether to continue with this system or modify it,” said an AKP insider, who nonetheless counts the cost in polarisation of the move to one-man rule. “The people of Turkey must meet again; we cannot tolerate this [division].”
